The Congress has once again targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the deteriorating situation in Manipur, accusing him of being “insensitive” to the pain of the state’s people. This fresh criticism comes after violence erupted in Imphal on Saturday night following the arrest of five members of the armed Meitei group Arambai Tenggol (AT).
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the Prime Minister has had the time to travel extensively across India and the world for inaugurations but has never engaged with Manipur’s political or civil society groups. He also blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for “failing miserably” in handling the crisis, which has persisted since May 2023.
Saturday night’s unrest saw angry mobs storm a police station in Imphal West, demanding the release of the arrested AT members. The state government responded by suspending mobile and internet services and prohibiting large gatherings across five districts, including Imphal West and East.
Ramesh added that even after President’s Rule was imposed in February 2025, the law-and-order situation remained grim. The Governor continues to travel between the airport and his residence by helicopter due to safety concerns. Calling the Prime Minister a "frequent-flyer," Ramesh said Modi's silence on Manipur was “shocking and indefensible,” especially when the entire nation is bearing the moral cost of the crisis.
